Empowering Middle Managers – 3 Ways
Is your company evolving in order to survive? Are your middle managers connected, or feeling alone? What’s your win-win plan of action to have everyone feeling more empowered? More Connected?
The TIP of the week comes from Christine Andrukonis. She is the founder and senior partner of Notion Consulting, a leadership and transformation consultancy.
In her article 3 ways to empower middle managers, Andrukonis begins by referencing The Change Report 2022 (Available to download). A report in which Notion Consulting surveyed 325 U.S. professionals in Q3 2022 – from front-line staff to C-Suite executives – about their experience with change in the workplace.
The report brings to light the difference in perceptions of C-suite versus employees. It denotes the disconnect that leaders have with employees when it comes to change. C-suite tends to grade a company higher during periods of change, while employees rate them significantly lower. Thus notes Andrukonis, “Considering this disconnect, middle managers are the ones who feel the crunch amidst the pressure of change. Yet, they’re the glue that keeps organizations together.”

Andrukonis offers meaningful advice on ways to help middle managers. Suggesting peer-to-peer or lateral mentoring, and candid coaching on what can be done better to improve systems, processes, and people management.
In the article, she discusses three simple ways to implement this peer mentoring
1. CREATE COMMUNITIES
2. ESTABLISH CADENCES
3. BUILD A LIGHT CONTENT STRUCTURE
Recognizing that by not helping your middle management you could be losing talent and clients. But being open-minded and curious is advantageous to everyone. Mentoring your middle managers so they don’t feel isolated is a win-win, and helps them develop relationships that are the catalyst toward a stronger organization.
