Lessons Learned “Relearned”

Both Graves and Johnson provided some intuitive understanding from previous roles that had to relearn in order to transition to the role of mentor.

Here are five lessons they gleaned along the way. Transitioning from company leadership to mentoring practices

1. Renovating Your Ego:

Shifting to a more service-oriented mindset. Coming to terms, with the fact that you are no longer the boss; instead, you are advising others on how to be better bosses.  Will need to check one’s ego, and not allow that ego to take up too much space in the room.

Not allow ego to take up too much space in the room.

Part of submerging one’s ego is never violating a trust, says Johnson. “You know when you are truly a ‘trusted advisor’ when your member tells you something no one else knows”.

2. Keeping A Routine

They talk about the best way to keep from getting overwhelmed – adapting old practices to fit the unique demands of a coaching gig. Developing routines that fit.

3. Going With Your Gut

A coach may have to take a leap and speak from experience. You find yourself having to deliver hard truths. “If it’s going to hit like lightning bolts, you just need to say it softly.”

“If it’s going to hit like lightning bolts, you just need to say it softly.”

4. Embracing Silence

In their toolbox is the power of asking a question and waiting in silence. “The three most important rules are to listen, listen, and listen,”  Ask the questions and have the patience and willingness to sit through discomfort however long it may take to get an answer.

5. Digging Deeper ( Holistic, person-based strategy)

It’s a complete switch to go from expecting work-life separation while pursuing the bottom line, to addressing emotional and personal roadblocks alongside occupational ones. Breaking new ground and a deeper dive for former executives.
